Client Solutions Highlight: Marrying Digital and Physical with IoT

Deliver a Reliable and Winning User Experience with IoT

IoT (The Internet of Things) is changing the game of how we interact with and control our physical environment. These days, our mobile devices can control just about anything that can be enhanced with software and technology. And yes, we’re getting used to it — lights click on controlled by an app on your phone, Alexa plays your favorite radio station, your smart watch tells you how active you’ve been in a day. But the potential of IoT goes so much further. In this case study, you’ll see how Tonic helped client Parkade, an all-in-one system for private parking, re-imagine how users interact with their app and the world around them by ideating how their users can access parking structures remotely, and helped users overcome a huge obstacle in engaging with the business.

When you hear of Parkade’s business, your reaction is probably two fold. 1) Awesome and 2) How? Parkade came up with a solution that would allow businesses a way to manage, book, and enforce parking all within one centralized location — their app. The business model helps customers to decrease labor costs and increase various revenue streams which makes the product a no-brainer for businesses. However, the main pain-point they faced wasn’t on the initial user side (businesses), it was for their end users (residents, customers, etc). These users desired a way to easily access their parking location without having to work across various solutions or stepping outside of the familiar workflow to engage with a physical solution.

This is where Tonic came in.

Tonic team members share robust IoT knowledge as well as the UX Design expertise required to help connect the physical and digital experiences for one seamless experience. Because of the nature of the product, Tonic set about identifying baseline user needs and goals (business side and end user) as well as helping to set a standard for how design is implemented for Parkade so that the solution created could be executed seamlessly in the product. Not only did the work we did allow for simple execution of the designs, it also set a baseline of guidelines for design moving forward — setting up our clients for success in the long run.

By being an early adopter of IoT technology, Parkade sets themselves up for success being placed among the expected 62% of B2B applications involving IoT by 2030 (McKinsey). Working with Tonic helped to implement the technology in a way that was easy for users to understand and use.
